Hilary Matheson loves being outside. Her first love is running, and she has had a number of podium and top ten finishes in the past four years at distances ranging from 50 km to 120 miles. She has also started rock climbing in the past few years, mostly to work on her underdeveloped upper body strength, and has since ventured into the world of ice climbing and mountaineering. Her motto is that she'll try anything once.
Hilary wasn't always able to be athletic or active. In her late teens, she spent the better part of a year hospitalized and battling complications from undiagnosed celiac disease. During those years, her weight dropped well below 100lb, and she lost most of her muscle mass to atrophy. In the years following her diagnosis and recovery, she slowly regained her muscle by hiking up Vancouver's Grouse Grind regularly. This progressed into "hike up, run down", which in turn led her down the life-altering rabbit hole that is trail running.
Discovering trail running has brought incredible joy and satisfaction to Hilary's life over the past five years, and she now has a genuine desire to see more people get off the couch and into the mountains. She started running with a DSLR in order to properly capture the beauty of the places she explores, and that has transitioned into an entirely new career in graphic design and content creation for a variety of brands. Brands she has worked with include Adidas, Lifestraw, Under Armour, Smartwool, Julbo, Oiselle, Inov-8, and Saucony. Working with these brands has brought incredible opportunities, including once-in-a-lifetime international trips that have ranged from handing out water filters in rural Kenya with Lifestraw to romping through fells in the Lake District with Inov-8, and running in the scorpion-infested Death Valley with Under Armour. She has no idea where her camera and legs will take her next, but she's always ready to go.
